Frequently Asked Questions

What is an implant?

An implant is an artificial root replacement made from titianium that is placed in the jaw bone. The implant can support either a tooth or a denture.

How does an implant replace a tooth?

The implant serves as an artificial root. After the implant heals in the bone, a post (abutement) is attached to the implant and then a crown (tooth) is placed on the post.

Can I get my tooth replacement done immediately?

Immediate replacement can only be accomplished if there is an excess of solid bone and there will be very little stress on the implant. If immediate tooth replacement is not possible, you will be able to have a temporary tooth replacement during your healing time.

How long does the process take?

Depends on the amount of available bone and the health of the patient. The range of treatment is generally 3 to 10 months.

What factors contribute to the long term success of dental implants?

Success will depend on the quality and quantity of bone. The better the bone, the greater the chance of long term success. Another important factor is the experience and ability of the doctor performing the surgery. And finally, the quality of the restoration placed on top of the implant is important.

What is the success rate of implants?

Excellent oral hygiene following implantation is crucial for continued success of implants. Several studies have found the success rate of implants to be over 95% in healthy patients with adequate bone support.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

It varies with each person. An effective local anesthetic is used during the surgery so that you do not have any discomfort during the placement of implant. The mild discomfort you might experience after surgery can be controlled with medications.

How often will I need to have my implants checked?

The success of your implants will depend greatly on how well you maintain them. They will need to be professionally cleaned by hygienist and examined by your implant dentist every six months.

What is ridge augmentation?

A procedure to recapture the natural contour of your gums and jaw. Sometimes when you lose one or more teeth, you can get an indention in your gums and jawbone where tooth used to be. This happens because the jawbone recedes when it no longer is holding a tooth in place. A Periodontist can fill in this defect with this procedure, recapturing the natural contour of your gums and jaw.
