One of the first warning signs that thereâs a problem is when the rim of the gums next to the teeth become red and swollen and bleeds easily when touched. This is known as Gingivitis and most often there is no discomfort at this stage. Periodontitis is a more advanced disease. Bone and tissue supporting the teeth are destroyed and the gum attachment begins separating from the teeth, creating pockets. Even at this stage, an individual may be unaware of the problem thatâs occurring in the mouth. What are the signs of gum disease? - Gums bleeding when brushing the teeth - Red and swollen gums. Tender gums - Gums pulling away from teeth, exposing roots and creating recessions. - Loose teeth, or spaces suddenly appearing between teeth , teeth beginning to flare out - A change in the way your teeth fit together, a different bite - Pus between teeth and gums; sudden swellings that are painful to the touch Once my gums have been treated, am I finished with Periodontists forever? Not in most cases. Periodontal disease is a chronic condition that is not cured but can be stabilized and maintained. Periodontists have a great track record when it comes to getting Periodontal conditions under control. What causes bad breath? If you donât brush and floss daily, particles of food remain in mouth, collecting bacteria, which can cause bad breath. Bad breath is also caused by dry mouth (xerostomia), which occurs when the flow of saliva decreases. Saliva is necessary to cleanse the mouth and remove particles that may cause odor. Tobacco products cause bad breath, stain teeth, reduce oneâs ability to taste foods and irritate gum tissues. Tobacco users are more likely to suffer from periodontal disease and are at greater risk for developing oral cancer. Eliminating periodontal disease and maintaining good oral health is essential to reducing bad breath. What factors contribute to the long term success of dental implants? Success will depend on the quality and quantity of bone. The better the bone, the greater the chance of long term success. Another important factor is the experience and ability of the doctor performing the surgery. And finally, the quality of the restoration placed on top of the implant is important. What is the success rate of implants? Excellent oral hygiene following implantation is crucial for continued success of implants. Several studies have found the success rate of implants to be over 95% in healthy patients with adequate bone support. Is dental implant surgery painful? It varies with each person. An effective local anesthetic is used during the surgery so that you do not have any discomfort during the placement of implant. The mild discomfort you might experience after surgery can be controlled with medications. How often will I need to have my implants checked? The success of your implants will depend greatly on how well you maintain them. They will need to be professionally cleaned by hygienist and examined by your implant dentist every six months. What is ridge augmentation? A procedure to recapture the natural contour of your gums and jaw. Sometimes when you lose one or more teeth, you can get an indention in your gums and jawbone where tooth used to be. This happens because the jawbone recedes when it no longer is holding a tooth in place. A Periodontist can fill in this âdefectâ with this procedure, recapturing the natural contour of your gums and jaw. Do I have to be referred to your office?
